One of the aspects to look at:

When Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn won the Nobel Prize in 1970 he spoke of how he imagined speaking to the world when imprisoned in the gulag. In freezing darkness he composed speeches in his mind. But when he stood before the great and the good in Stockholm, where all the world would hear him, he said he could only quote his mentor, Dostoyevsky: "Beauty will save the world."

According to its aesthetical values the modern concept of a beauty has plenty of controversial connotations. The distinction between beautiful and ugly has become more blurred nowadays and pleasurable practices, generally achievable through the beautiful visual/textual images, can also include an ulterior desire of satisfaction gazing at shocking ugliness.
